I have a dream, too

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day!

It’s hard to know what to say about a man who risked everything for freedom and equality. It’s hard to choose a favorite quote because Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said so many profound and inspiring things. It’s hard to even dream a little–his dreams were so much nobler than mine.

But he has inspired me anyway. I’ve decided to write my own little “I have a dream” speech. I’d love it if you would add a dream in the comment section. What do you dream of for your country, your culture, and your legacy?

I have a dream that injustice will be stopped—that hunger will cease, that slaves will be set free, that natural resources will be saved, that tyrants will be eliminated, that the gospel will be spread freely to every person.

I dream that my children will take advantage of their blessings–that they will love God, serve humanity, raise godly families, and impact their communities. I hope and pray that they will have the freedom to do so.

I have a dream that the Christian community will choose love instead of hate towards people whose hearts have rejected God, because nobody has ever been censured or pressured someone into the kingdom of heaven. And it certainly isn’t Christian to be glad that bad people are going to hell.

I have a dream that the church will be lived out every day, in school, work, and home, and that worship services are celebrations of whom God has reached through His people the other six days of the week.

I have a dream that the church will embrace all races and all cultures. That we will make everyone belong.

I have a dream that one day people won’t have to worry about “political correctness” because we will value each another for their souls, not for their preferences.

I have a dream that people will cherish their own genders, race, and personalities as God-given gifts, perfectly suited for them, and we will not elevate one gender or race above another in an attempt to make ourselves feel valued.

I have a dream that Christian children, teens, and young adults will stand unafraid to be holy, chaste, responsible, respectful, and God-fearing in a culture that is afraid to stand up for anything absolute.

I have a dream that the world will recognize that Jesus is the one, true God—not so I can be “right,” but so they can be righteous.

I dream of heaven on earth.

It’s not up to my government. It’s not up to my church. It’t up to me.

I am the government. I am the church.

Obviously, I will fail at this endeavor. But that’s okay because the results are in God’s hands, not mine.

You will fail, too, and I will try not to judge you for it. Maybe we can all just forgive and applaud frail humanity whenever we try to do good. It’s the trying and failing that reminds us how much we need Jesus, and it’s the repentance that changes us to be more like Him so we can try again and do better the next time.

It’s through repentance and forgiveness that dreams are realized.

Matthew 5:1-19
