How to get wisdom: a hint and a prayer

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” (James 1:5)

Wisdom is a super-helpful characteristic. It keeps you from saying things you shouldn’t. It keeps you from making the wrong decision. It gives you courage to say and do things that are hard but right. It helps you anticipate the future and adapt accordingly.

Wisdom is valuable. It’s not luck.

“Take hold of my words with all your heart; keep my commands, and you will live.  Get wisdom, get understanding do not forget my words or turn away from them.  Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you.” (Proverbs 4:4-6)

This is what the Apostle Paul told one of his churches:

“My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledgeI tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments.… So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” (Colossians 2:2-7)

So how do I get godly wisdom?

1. Pray for it
2. Be united in love with the church
3. Live in Christ and for Christ
4. Be strengthened by your faith
5. Overflow with thankfulness
“See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.” (Colossians 2:8)

Dear Lord God,
Fill me and use me.
Give me your perspective and your wisdom–
I long for it!
I want to see everything the way you see it.
I want to live a life of hope and courage,
not one of disillusionment and fear.
I trust in you, Lord.
Guide me in your way
and instruct me in your truth.
Then I will find wisdom.
Your power and authority are available to me.
Lord, I seize them and cherish them!
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
